Organized by experienced promoter, Mr. Stanislav Pesat, in cooperation with the Czech Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, the 1st edition of the IFBB Diamond Cup in Ostrava, Czechia, attracted 242 competitors representing 20 countries. They were fighting for trophies in 31 categories. The overall winners in Men’s Bodybuilding, Men’s Classic Bodybuilding, Men’s Physique, Women’s Bikini Fitness and Women’s Bodyfitness were awarded the right to turn Pro.
IFBB was represented by the following officials: Mr. Jose Ramos (IFBB Executive); Mr. Jose Maria Garcia (Head Judge) and Mr. Andrew Michalak (IFBB Press Commission). Mr. Jan Lewandowski was working as a statistician, Mr. Igor Kopcek and his East Labs team as the IFBB media staff.
A big Ice Hokey indoor stadium “Ostravar Arena” was the venue, which is known for bodybuilding fans as the place of the 1992 European Championships and 2006 World Championships. To conduct all these 31 categories in one day, the event started just after 8:00 o’clock in the morning and finished at 19:30 in the evening, followed by the Farewell Party in the nearby “Puls Hotel”.
The contest in Ostrava opened the “three-weekend” series of big IFBB international competitions, which will also include “IFBB Diamond Cup Portugal” in Espinho (June 02-04) and “Olympia Amateur Spain” in Marbella (June 09-10). Then, the World Children Fitness Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia (June 17-19) and a couple of weeks of summer vacation in the IFBB, till August 04-06, when the Ben Weider Legacy Cup will be staged in Aruba, Caribbean.
BODYBUILDING
Very exciting and tough battle for the overall title between the super-heavyweight winner Blessing Awodibu (Ireland) and 100 kg category winner Roman Vavrecan (Slovakia), which gave Awodibu the final victory with a minimum possible gap of 1 point! Awodibu’s first international success was the victory at the 2014 Arnold Classic Europe in Madrid, where he won the juniors open class over Piotr Borecki (Poland). And Borecki also came to Ostrava and won the 90 kg category, so they met once again, in the overall this time. Borecki placed 3rd, behind Vavrecan. Vavrecan also started to compete in 2014, winning junior’s category at the Mozolani Classic. In 2016 he won 95 kg category at the IFBB Diamond Cup in Zilina, Slovakia. Now, all top three former juniors, all 26 years old, met in the overall category in Ostrava. The IFBB Pro League Pro Card went to Awodibu but he declared he would compete as an amateur in Olympia Spain in Marbella or, maybe, also in the Arnold Europe in Barcelona in September. The remaining Bodybuilding category, up to 80 kg, was won by the next Polish athlete, Artur Szudrowicz, who was the finalist of the 2014 European Championships and 3rd place winner at the 2016 Olympia Amateur Spain. Awodibu and Borecki will perform in Espinho and Marbella as well. Szudrowicz will join them in Marbella.
CLASSIC BODYBUILDING
Classic Bodybuilding battles were not less exciting. Hungarian star Gergely Arnold won the short class, up to 175 cm. He was entered in Bodybuilding up to 80 kg category but his bodyweight dropped below the upper limit of Classic Bodybuilding, so he decided to turn to this division and it was a perfect move. The next two titles went to Polish stars: Michal Zadlo and Jacek Ratusznik. They all met in the overall and, while Ratusznik unanimously won his tall class, he unexpectedly lost the overall battle 8:9 to Arnold. Arnold came to the IFBB in 2014 and then placed almost always in the top 6 of many international events, including Arnold USA, Arnold Europe and Olympia Amateur Europe, but not in the medal zone. He started this season with 8th position at the Arnold USA, trying in Bodybuilding 80 kg class, but now returned to Classic Bodybuilding and can be happy, winning the Pro Card. Ratusznik is a “winning machine” (in 2016 won seven IFBB international events – 4 in the overall) and already won the overall at Diamond Cup in Malta this year. We will see him in Espinho and Marbella as well.
MEN’S PHYSIQUE
Very close battles in almost all 4 categories. Only Aleksandr Ulanov (Russia) clearly won the short class, up to 176 cm. Christoph Friedl (Austria) won the 179 cm class being tied 13:13 with Piotr Zielinski (Poland). Two Czech competitors: Miroslav Juríček and Miroslav Přibáň at the top of 182 cm category. Michał Aumiler (Poland) won the tall class, over 182 cm, being tied with László Molnár (Hungary). In the overall, clear domination of Miroslav Juríček, leaving behind Ulanov and Friedl, who were tied. Juríček had no international contests history, so won the Pro Card in his first bigger competition. New star was born!
WOMEN’S BODYFITNESS
Three categories were combined into one open class with full semifinals of 15 athletes. The title went to Hungarian star Melinda Mercz, who emerged at the 2015 World Championships, entering the finals. Then won 2016 EVLS Prague and Arnold Europe over a group of top stars, what proved that she is capable to win any international event. And this in Ostrava was the next one. She left behind Alzbeta Petkova (Slovakia) and two well-known Spanish stars: Noelia Segura and Patricia Barbero. Mercz immediately turned Pro, joined a group of Pro Figure competitors and wasn’t the last finisher among them…
WOMEN’S BIKINI FITNESS
Six categories, 2 titles for Czechia, 2 for Lithuania, with Slovakia and Hungary with 1 title each. In most of categories very close battles for the top position.
Up to 158 cm class: Marina Mocanu (Czechia) won by 1 point over 2017 Diamond Cup Malta winner Katarzyna Dmochewicz (Poland).
Up to 162 cm class: 2016 World Championships runner-up Karina Gavrikova (Hungary) won by 1 point over her team-mate and 2016 EVLS Prague winner Dora Bodo.
Up to 166 cm class: the latest European Championships bronze medal winner Andrea Neumannova (Slovakia) won by 2 points over World Championships top 10 Ina Navachuk (Belarus) and by 3 points over 2017 Diamond Cup Malta runner-up Ekaterina Rykova (Russia). First, Navachuk, 23, won the junior open class.
Up to 169 cm class: Lithuanian star Kristina Narbutaitytė’s second win in a row, following her triumph at the Diamond Cup in Malta. Will she continue this winning series in Espinho and Marbella, where she already registered in?
Up to 172 cm class: tough battle of two equal stars: Diana Stankejeva (Lithuania) and Brigitta Békefi (Hungary), who finally were tied 9:9. Closer analysis of the judges scores gave 1st place to Stankejeva, who won the Oslo Grand Prix earlier this year.
Over 172 cm class: the next exciting duel of two super stars: Natalya Lugovskih (Russia) and Eva Havelková (Czechia). At the 2016 EVLS Prague Lugovskih won over Havelková by 2 points but later on she placed always few places ahead of the Czech star. At the 2017 European Championships Lugovskih was the winner, Havelkova won the bronze medal. But Lugovskih came to Ostrava in a glory of the best European Bikini Fitness star, winning the overall title in Santa Susanna. In Ostrava it was clear at first glance that Havelkova was in her best ever condition and will be a very demanding challenger. And something impossible occurred to be possible: she slightly won both rounds over Lugovskih and earned the Pro Card! Their next meet will take place at the Olympia Amateur Spain in Marbella.
