2006 IFBB WORLD JUNIORS & MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS CAME TO SICILY

AGRIGENTO, SICILY, ITALY
November 10-13, 2006

World Juniors and Masters Championships have become a very important and specific IFBB event, gathering nearly 182 athletes from 38 countries and from 15 to 65 years old.

As the IFBB President, Dr. Rafael Santonja, emphasized in his opening speech, pointing out the competitors on the stage :

“Learn how to live a bodybuilding lifestyle. They are the perfect examples: you can be fit, strong and shaped in a very young age as well as in an advanced age”.

Agrigento, host city for the 2006 World Championships due to Alfio Strano – president of the AS Heracles Club. The city of Agrigento greatly supported the Championships, treated it as a promotion of the city, its history and culture. The authorities were involved in the preparation process as well as in running of the event. Many of them have been honored by the IFBB President, Dr. Rafael Santonja with the highest IFBB awards, like Aldo Piazza (Mayor of Agrigento), Roberto Gallo (Councilor for Tourism), Carmelo Callari (Cauncelor for Sport) to mention the top officials.

The Italian Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation under the leadership of its vigorous president Benedetto Mondello made a great input to the Championships, staged in the modern Convention Center (Palacongressi), running all activities in a very smooth manner. Beside the usual sport activity at the Championships, participants had the opportunity to visit the famous Valley of the Temples declared a UNESCO Heritage Site, as this region of Sicily has had the Greek roots and history reaching 6th century B.C.

The younger competitors battled for the medals in the nine official bodyweight (bodybuilders) or height (fitness) categories. Junior men bodybuilding was dominated by the strong teams from Egypt, Syria and Bulgaria, with Sherif Abdel Aziz of Egypt as the overall winner. Florina Cernat of Romania defended her women junior bodybuilding title won in Budapest last year.

And there was new bodybuilding category called Classic Bodybuilding, officially introduced to the Championships for the first time. Hungarian athlete Tamas Simon took the first world junior title in this class.
Most of the medals in the junior fitness categories were distributed among the Russian, Polish and Ukrainian athletes. Special attention should be paid to the Ukrainian junior men fitness star Maksym Orobets, whose outstanding routine was a mixture of top sport and top art. Full of drama battle between Russia’s Yulya Ushakova and Hungarian’s Boglarka Toth in women junior body-fitness was very emotional, giving the third-in-a-row silver medal to Toth.

World women bodybuilding champions Irina Muntean (Romania) and Claudia Partenza (Italy) run a very tough duel for the title, changing the places from round to round, but finally Partenza took the victory.

The line-up of 25 competitors took part in master women body-fitness struggle. Italian Carmen Galasso was unbeatable in this category.
Two master bodybuilding titles went to Germany, as Michael Kohler won the 70 kg class and Olaf Peters returned after few year break to grasp the gold medal in over 50 class. Three-time world men champion Tagir Fakhrutdinov of Russia won his first gold medal in the masters divisions (80 kg) and Abdulla Jassim of Qatar recaptured the world title in 90 kg class, lost last year to phenomenal Wolfgang Klotz, who didn’t appear this time.
Petru Ciorba of Romania finished first in the +90 kg class, after two silver and one bronze medals won in the past three years. He is like good wine, improving with his age. And something new in the IFBB Championships – over 60 category, for the oldest athletes. It seems that the Spaniards take care of their physiques in the best way as the top two places went to them. If you look at the winner, Rafael Vera, you can’t believe this man is over 60.
