WOMEN’S WORLD CAHMPIONSHIPS REPORT
NOVI SAD 2011

by Andrew Michalak

This year’s Women’s World Championships were held next weekend after inaugural Arnold Classic Europe in Madrid and many competitors took part in both events, improving their body condition during those few days. In the meantime, some of them, like famous fitness star from Uruguay, Marta Aquiar, flew with the IFBB President Dr. Rafael Santonja, to Guadalajara, Mexico, to demonstrate fitness at the 16th Pan American Games.
Extremely busy, important and successful week for the IFBB! Our women’s athletes, like show business stars, had to change planes every few days but they also… had to keep the contest shape and be on the sport diet, what is much more demanding and difficult task. The life of the stars is not so easy…

Anyway, the quality of athletes at the Women’s Worlds in Novi Sad was really incredible in most of categories. Especially in women’s fitness over 163 cm and in bodyfitness over 168 cm, where several world champions run a tough battle for medals and... money awards, offered by the IFBB in both women’s fitness categories.
Championships, attended by the IFBB President, Dr. Rafael Santonja with his wife Nieves, as well as by the Arnold Sport Festival promoter Mr. Bob Lorimer and many National Federations’ presidents, attracted competitors from 38 countries and 6 continents. The event, run in the big sport and entertainment complex SPENS Arena in Novi Sad, proved that women’s physique sports has been progressing very quickly, with many new, amazing talents coming each year and challenging the renown champions. The best examples: 21-years-old fitness competitor from Hungary, Melinda Szabo, who won the Europeans junior title earlier this year and now has become the world women’s champion, but… is going to fight for the world junior title next months in Santa Susanna, Spain.
Then, two Russian girls: Elina Gook and Yulia Ushakova, world junior bodyfitness champions who won the world women’s titles in Novi Sad in their first try. Ushakova’s career has got an incredible acceleration: being still a junior, she won the 2010 European Women’s Championships in overall and managed to repeat the same success at the Women’s Worlds, winning over three former world champions in her category and the next two former world champions in the overall class. What is so exceptional in the physique of this University student from Tyumen? To know, look on the pictures.
And one more outstanding performance: man’s fitness star from Estonia, Oleg Anissimov. Oleg is ready to perform the most difficult moves with technical perfection, elegance, lightness and easiness. I haven’t seen so great fitness performer since times of the men’s fitness pioneer Zoltan Kormos in early 2000s. The second same level fitness athlete is Konstantin Nekrasov of Russia but he still recuperates after the Achilles tendon injury last year.
The Championships were perfectly prepared and organized by the experience team of Serbian Federation and its local branch – Vojvodina Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation officials. They already promoted three European championships, one in Cacak and two in Novi Sad but this time they staged their forst World Championships. And they deserve for the excellent score this time also! I believe, it wasn’t the last IFBB contest in this place, conveniently located in Central Europe.
Now, have a closer look what happened in each class.

Women’s fitness up to 163 cm: finally, 12 competitors appeared on the stage but nobody from the top six of the 2010 Worlds. This created a special opportunity for the new stars. The stage was “conquered” by the top European juniors: Melinda Szabo (gold medal) and Dominika Multanova (bronze medal), separated by the current Brazilian champion Janaina Matos. Szabo came in a glory of the Arnold Europe winner, where she placed ahead of other top world players. The top three were awarded with prize money of EUR 1200; 800 and 500.

Women’s fitness over 163 cm: 10 athletes and amazing sport quality. Unexpected comeback of the 2008 world champion and professional Cirque de Soleil performer Alewtyna Titarenko (Ukraine), who won all rounds and then the close battle between 2011 Europeans overall winner Natalia Nazarenko-Kiivikas and two former world champions from Russia: Tatiana Dvrotsova and Natalia Chukaeva. Nazarenko-Kiivikas continued her series of victories over them, taking the silver medal, with bronze medal for Dvrotsova and 4th place for Chukaeva. Former world junior champion Oksana Orobets (Ukraine) performed very well in the routine rounds (3rd place) but dropped to the 5th position after the physique assessment rounds. Still ahead of the South American champion Marta Aquiar (Uruguay), who was a bit tired from all these recent trips and starts.
Titarenko had no problem with winning the overall title as her matured body was perfectly shaped and won the next EUR 2000 for this victory.

Men’s fitness open: great changes compared to the previous year as only Sergey Kolenchikov (Russia) came to defend his world title. But Oleg Anissimov (Estonia) performed fantastic routine and improving his body quality grasped the title, leaving Kolenchikov in the 2nd place, ahead of Yuri Kasmynin (Russia) and David Baburek (Czech Republic).

Women’s bodybuilding up to 55 kg: multi-time world champion Jana Purdjakova (Slovakia) came in the top condition and easily won her 8th world title, equalize the achievement of Egyptian bodybuilder El-Shahat Mabrouk. Former Worlds runner-up Ludmila Tuboltseva (Russia) clearly won the silver medal, ahead of Carla Marquardt (Germany).

Women’s bodybuilding over 55 kg: longer and stronger line-up with 11 athletes. Nobody could stop the current European overall champion Nina Loebardt (Germany) from winning her first world title: neither former world champion Simone Linay (Germany), nor South American champion Carola Nostas (Bolivia), 2010 European Championships overall winner Natalia Vtyurina (Russia) and NPC Team Universe winner Pamela Wentz (USA).

Bikini fitness up to 163 cm: 15 athletes in the line-up and wonderful success of the European Championships runner-up Oksana Markovetskaya (Russia), leaving behind Arnold Europe 3rd place winner Andrea Hertlein (Germany) and 2011 European Championships 3rd place winner Andra Voicu (Romania).

Bikini fitness over 163 cm: the longest line-up of 22 athletes. The current European and Arnold Europe champion Nikola Weiterova (Slovakia) continued her series of victories, wining the next gold medal, ahead of the new star from Slovakia: Jana Majernikova and still improving UK athlete Michelle Brannan.

Bodyfitness up to 158 cm: 13 athletes and great duel between former world junior and current European champion Elina Gook (Russia) and Arnold Europe winner Giada Simari (Italy), with the final victory of Gook. The bronze medal for new, young star from Finland: Mari Pakkila.

Bodyfitness up to 163 cm: what a dynamic changes of the situation: 2010 world champion Olga Muntian (Ukraine) easily won the first round (with 7 points), with the coming back 2009 world champion Zrinka (Korac) Fiser hardly entering the finals at 6th place (37 points). The Sunday finals changed this situation upside-down: much better dried and conditioned Zrinka advanced to the top position, pushing down Muntian to the 2nd place, Kati Alander (Finland) to the 3rd place and Michela Fre (Italy) to the 4th position.

Bodyfitness up to 168 cm: next exciting duel of 2010 European champion and Arnold Europe winner Ekaterina Gamagina (Russia) and Arnold Europe runner-up Daniela Pfeiffer (Germany). Clear victory of Gamagina, who has become the world renown leader of this class. Very good condition of the Ukrainian master’s bodyfitness star Tetyana Mikheyczyk, who took the bronze medal.

Bodyfitness over 168 cm: Over 20 athletes, many big names and big changes in the classification. 2010 Worlds overall winner Nina Furseth (Norway) failed to defend her title and dropped to the 6th position. It was a great day of the current Europeans overall winner Yulia Ushakova (Russia), who won both rounds, ahead of former world champions: Yulia Zabelina (Russia) and Evgeniya Prutskova (Ukraine).

Great Championships with fantastic sport quality of athletes coming from all corners of the world! More detailed report in the next IFBB Universe issue.
