2012 ARNOLD CLASSIC EUROPE

by Andrew Michalak

The 2012 Arnold Classic Europe was the second edition of the European version of Arnold Classic America. Honoured by the presence of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim and Bob Lorimer, Spanish Olympic Committee President Alejandro Blanco as well as IFBB President Dr. Rafael Santonja, the multi-sport event got a tremendous attention in the media and local sport fans in Madrid. Thousands of them visited the Expo tied to the show and watched the pro as well as the amateur events.
It was a real marathon lasting from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm. But it was a very exciting marathon. Great venue with tremendous space, great stage with impressive back wall banner, great IFBB President Dr. Rafael Santonja, being a host and keeping an eye of every aspect of this sport festival, great master of ceremony, Mr. Armando Marquez, near the end exchanged by Mrs. Rosella Pruneti (who can stand and speak more than few hours?). And great chief judge, Mr. Pawel Filleborn, who couldn’t leave his place even to eat something and was responsible for smooth and fast proceedings. And great athletes, giving us so many exciting feelings and emotions. With 692 physique sports competitors in total, the 2012 Arnold Classic Europe has been the biggest event ever held in the IFBB! Taking into account the increasing popularity of Arnolds everywhere: in USA (Columbus), in Europe (Madrid) and with Brazil (Rio) in the perspective, we can expect to break the next barriers: 800, maybe even 1000 participants? Who could expect so dynamic progress of our sport in this not so easy times for the world? Our bodybuilding global family has been expanding so fast, with thousands of new, perfectly shaped “babies” entering the international stages each year.

The second day was also a marathon lasting from 10:00 am till 9:30 pm. In most categories the number of athletes was over 15, so the elimination was needed.
A break was planned in the amateur event to allow us to watch the pro show but is was practically impossible since the amateur championships had to be run with no break to finish it before midnight.
In most categories we saw an incredible level of competition and top quality athletes. It is clearly seen how our physiques sports are progressing and how our champions are progressing, how they improve every aspect of their presentation and performance. The best examples is “T-walking” in bodyfitness. When it was introducing a year ago, ladies were too stiff, too tense, too stressed. Now it is a very attractive parade of the fantastic stars: flexible, coquettish, loose. Very impressive part of performance creating unforgettable impressions.

Sunday it was the day of the giants. With 27 athletes in the 100 kg class and 34 in the super heavyweight it was a real challenge to get to the top 15, and a great success to enter the finals. So, many giants left the stage disappointed as only the medal winners could be happy. This is the price of the growing popularity of our sports.

Junior women’s bodyfitness
One big star, 2012 European junior overall champion Doina Gorun of Italy, who showed the perfect physique and received the perfect scores from the judges.

Junior men’s bodybuilding
One clear leader Raul Maghir of Romania. Very complete, harmonized bodybuilder, with no weak points and in the best shape in the line-up. Top quality muscles with separation and definition. Two guys: Wesley Gasparotto (Italy) and Yury Burnaev (Russia) showed big, full muscles but lacking top quality and definition.

Master men’s bodybuilding, age 50-59
Once again a clear leader: 2009 European masters overall winner Rafael Arana of Spain, who definitely won all three rounds due to the perfect body condition and quality. Much bigger competitor, former European champion Jose Camacho Rebolo of Portugal couldn’t challenge Arana due to lack of muscle definition. Competitor with biggest legs in the line-up, Eduardo Zoega of Brazil, placed 5th due to the same shortcomings.

Master men’s bodybuilding, age over 60
Nobody could challenge the world and European champion Bernie Cooper of the United Kingdom who combine muscle size and quality. The other world champion Rafael Vera of Spain displayed very good body proportions but needed a bit lower bodyfat level.

Women’s bikini fitness up to 163 cm
In each of three categories more than 20 athletes. Amazing review of female beauty, styles of presentation and bodylines. In each category a small “return match” after the Women’s Worlds in Bialystok a week earlier. Some of them improved their body condition, the other have lost it. Amy Wright proved once again her domination in the short class up to 160 cm. Cynthia Benoit of Canada jumped from 5th place in Bialystok to the 2nd position but the more impressive moving up was done by Heather Schofield of the United Kingdom, who placed 15th in Bialystok but took the 3rd position in Madrid. She was looking great and returned to the 3rd position won at the latest European Championships in Zagreb.:

Women’s bikini fitness up to 168 cm
Second great duel of Tanja Canc (Slovenia) and Karina Antovska (Slovakia). In Bialystok Antovska dethroned Canc but in Madrid Canc successfully returned to the top position and, moreover, won the overall title as well. Great success of this bikini fitness diva from Slovenia. Antovska didn’t give up easily: she even won the first round and lost the leadership in the second round. Brazilian newcomer at this level Marcia Goncalves, jumped to the 3rd position while Ukrainian blond beauty Liudmila Diachuk once again in the 4th position, after Zagreb and Bialystok, despite the fact that she was in her life condition in Madrid. Nina Silic of Australia – once again in the 6th place.

Women’s bikini fitness over 168 cm
In the absence of the world champion Anna Virmayoki of Finland, this opportunity was successfully used by Vladimira Krasova (Czech Republic) and Rhiannon Harris (Australia). They exchanged their positions compared to Bialystok: Krasova moved up to the top while Harris stayed in the 2nd place.
I was personally impressed by the perfect style and condition of Egle Eller-Nabi of Estonia who moved up one place, to the 3rd position, but only one point behind Harris. Jana Majernikova of Slovakia still in the 5th place but improved her style a lot. The biggest advancement: Adalheidur Ólafsdóttir of Island who finished in the elimination round in Bialystok and now moved up the 6th place.

Women’s bodybuilding
What a different view than in Bialystok! Seventeen impressive athletes on the stage created very interesting and exciting competition. First place went to someone new in the IFBB line-up, former world Thai Boxing champion Jacqueline Fuchs of Switzerland. Being in the perfect shape she managed to push down famous Czech star Katerina Kyptowa to the 2nd position – the same like a year ago. Kyptova displayed big and full muscles but needed a bit higher quality and more details. Salla Kauranen of Finland finished in the 3rd place, same like at the 2011 Arnold America.

Women’s physique
New category in the IFBB and the successful inauguration. Category for women between bodybuilding and bodyfitness, something similar to men’s classic bodybuilding but with no weight/height limits. Most girls looked very attractive, some of them needed a bit harder and dried bodies. First titles went to:
- Zsuzsanna Tirpak b(Hungary) in the short class, up to 163 cm class
- Eva Pogacnik (Slovenia) in the tall class, over 163 cm
We could see in the line-up many former bodybuilding and bodyfitness stars like: Liudmila Tuboltseva (Russia), Alina Cepurniene (Lithuania), Noemia de Abreu (Brazil) , Kristina Dybdahl (Denmark), Lorena Inarra (Spain), Carola Nostas (Bolivia), Ester Parisi (Italy), Branislava Jovanovic (Serbia).

Men’s physique
Over 20 men from 7 countries decided to take part in this inaugural event. Most of them came from Spain and Brazil. Their legs from the knees up to the waist are covered by short beach pants so can’t be assessed. Only calves and upper body, which, in general, looks like bodybuilder’s trunk and is shaped to a similar degree. Muscles are smaller but hard and shaped, with low bodyfat level. Lighter level of classic bodybuilding, with smaller lats and arms but still quite impressive pecs and abs. This is the current trend. Good sport for persons who don’t want to develop legs. Short class, up to 178 cm, had much longer line-up that the tall class. Seven Spanish competitors, four Brazilian but the title went to Portugal as Rui de Brito was declared the winner, being tied with the Spanish athlete Bruno Bermejo. The next two places went to Paulius Ratkovicius (Lithuania) and Caio da Cunha (Brazil).
In the tall class Martin Mester (Spain) placed at the top, ahead of Robin Balogh (Hungary) and the next Spaniard Javier Lozano.

Bodybuilding up to 70 kg
Unquestionable leader: 6-time world champion and 2011 Arnold America and Arnold Europe winner Jose Carlos Santos (Brazil), who dropped into 3rd place at 2012 Arnold America but now returned to the top position. Full, hard and well separated muscles earned him the perfect scores. In the 2nd place someone new, German bodybuilder Ismaile Boruco, few points ahead of experienced champions: Fabio Branciamore (Italy) and Johnatan Reverte (Spian).

Bodybuilding up to 75 kg
Excited duel of two-time world champion Corrado Maggiore (Italy) who tried in the other organizations in 2009 and now came back to the IFBB in 2011, wining the 2nd place at Arnold Europe. Karol Malecki of Poland won the 2nd place at the 2011 Arnold America and won the first Amateur Olympia in London. In this tough combat over Maggiore he won two rounds and they were tied in the 3rd round what brought the victory to Malecki. This can be considered as his life achievement.

Bodybuilding up to 80 kg
The next very close battle of the 2012 world champion from Mumbai, Ahmad Paydar (Iran) and 2010 World Championships bronze medal winner Andriy Sharapov (Ukraine), who unfortunately was not placed at the 2012 Arnold America. But in Madrid Sharapov was in his best conditions, forcing Paydar to the maximum efforts. This was a duel of the two top world bodybuilders and very attractive to the viewers.
Paydar won two rounds and lost in the third round but it was enough to win the gold medal. Sharapov displayed tremendous upper body but need to harmonized legs to his trunk.

Bodybuilding up to 85 kg
Czech bodybuilder Vojtek Koritensky has just moved to the IFBB being successful in the other organization. And he confirmed his quality, winning all three rounds and showing muscularity with no weak points and tremendous thigh and calf development. Behind him, three others were fighting for the silver medal: Saied Karjalian from Iran against two Rusians: Alexander Kolyashnikov and Artem Masalov. It was a very close battle in the semifinals but Karjalian earned better scores in the finals, placing ahead of Kolyashnikov and Masalov.

Bodybuilding up to 90 kg
The longest line-up with 28 competitors and packed with big names. Jose Bustamante of Venezuela came in a glory of 2012 Arnold America winner to defend his 2011 Arnold Europe title. He was short, very muscular , with professional quality legs but, unfortunately, a bit too smooth and dropped to the 5th position. The other bodybuilding star Alexander Kodzoev of Russia displayed super quality conditions and gave no chance to his opponents winning all three rounds with perfect scores. Behind him we can see new Iranian star Reza Kakavand – athlete with nicely balanced muscular development and good quality. Then Ricardo Correia of the United Kingdom, who could be titled “the king of legs” and Emiliano Dell’uomo of Italy.

Bodybuilding up to 100 kg
A long line-up of 27 bodybuilders with many well-known names, medal winner at the continental or world championships. Even the European champions couldn’t be sure to advance to the finals (Martin Drab). Other two top European bodybuilder: Antonio Furic (Croatia) and Miha Zupan (Slovenia) took the 3rd and the 4th places respectively. Young and gifted Swiss athlete Francisco Corral moved up to the 2nd place and looked amazing, with big, full and hard muscles. Maybe future world champion? But the winner came from Brazil: Cristovao Santiago won the 2008 South American Championships then trained hard few years more and now was unbeatable, winning all three rounds. His sharp definition and deep muscle separation was a decisive factor, I think.

Bodybuilding over 100 kg
Incredible, the longest line-up in the IFBB history in this class: 34 giants, many of them with bodyweight around 120 kg. But the winner wasn’t the heaviest bodybuilder among them; however if we analyze the coefficient bodyweight to body height, he was absolutely unbeatable (105 kg, 169 cm), looking like a pro bodybuilder. Aleksey Lesukov, 24, won the 2007 European Junior Championships, then 2011 Arnold Classic America. Now came even heavier and won all three rounds. Vitalaijs Aleksandrovs of Latvia used to participate in the other organizations except the 2005 World Games when he represented IFBB. Then once again in the other federations and recently decided to move to the IFBB and his comeback was quite impressive.
Then, in the 3rd place, fantastic bodybuilder from Denmark, Patrick Johnson, who displayed big muscles and have great potentials. Then, in the 4th place, two-time European champion Mikhail Sidorychev of Russia – bodybuilder with the most impressive “Back double biceps” pose in the line-up. Then, in the 5th place, a newcomer at the international level Markus Hoppe of Germany. Great result as for his first international competition. Then,, in the 6th place, two-time European Championships bronze medal winner, who moved up one position compared to the 2011 Arnold Europe.
And who failed to enter the finals? Not less impressive list of names: 2009 Arnold America winner Pavel Kirilenko, 2011 Arnold Europe finalist Paata Petriashvili (both of Russia), Igor Gostiunin – former classic bodybuilder with unbelievable number of 11 victories (no other places) at the national contests, including Russian Nationals and Easter European Cup, Petr Brezna of the Czech Republic – 3rd place winner at the 2011 Arnold Europe, 2011 Men’s Worlds runner-up Andrzej Kolodziejczyk of Poland, “African Bulldozer” Vusumsi Njisane. Uff, what a crowd of famous athletes!

Bodybuilding overall
Interesting, two top places for Russia and the next two places for Brazil. The first pair: Alexander Kodzoev vs. Aleksey Lesukov, the second: Jose Carlos Santos vs. Cristovao Santiago. Usual, the super heavyweight champion takes the title but this time the result was different. Kodzoev displayed beautiful symmetry, proportions and quality and impressed the judges more than mass monster Lesukov. I asked few judges for their opinion on this verdict and they said that Lesukov, having so big muscles size at his not so big body height, has lost good proportions and balance. Moreover, he was not so ripped as Kodzoev, who finally won 7:9.
The Brazilian duel went to Santiago. In my opinion, Santos lost a bit of his muscles quality since his finals on Friday and looked a bit smoother on Sunday.

Women’s bodyfitness up to 158 cm category
Three girls form the 2012 Women’s Worlds: Angela Derzapf, Silvia Kovacsova and Martina Tarkova were separated by Vernica Gallego, Sonja Branciamore and Bojana Vasiljevic. In the absence of the world champion Elina Gook, Worlds runner-up Derzpaf moved up to the 1st position. 2nd place finisher Vernica Gallego of Spain was close to the final victory, winning the first round 7:15 over Derzapf but in the finals judges change their preferences and put Derzapf in the first place (9:15). It’s not an often situation, especially when the finals are run the same day as semifinals. It proves that athletes can be seen in a bit different way where there are 15 of them on stage (semifinals) than if there are only 6 of them (finals). And we need to remember that there is an additional, very important part of presentation in the finals: T-walking, which can seriously influence the judges’ decisions.
Nice success of Gallego, who placed 7th at the 2011 Masters Worlds. Branciamore placed 4th at the 2009 European Championships but this events was more tough. Vasiljevic returned after two-year break, taking the 5th place. She has great potentials but was a bit too smooth this time.

Women’s bodyfitness up to 163 cm category
Almost the same final like in Bialystok. Only Gabriela Szabo didn’t come. And this “returned much” was very tough and exciting, especially for the two top athletes: Zrinka Fiser (Croatia) and anna Szczotka (Poland). Szczotka hasn’t won over Fisher till this event, loosing at the 2009 and 2012 Worlds but has been consequently improving (legs) and after a very tough combat (they were tied 10:10 in the first round) managed to grasp the title winning the second round 9:12. Two great bodyfitness champions, so they may exchanged places each time. For the 3rd place winner Renata Marcinkute of Lithuania it was her biggest success ever. Still improving Tarja Vahakuopus moved up one place, to the 4th position, while Analia Galeano of Argentina dropped to the 6th place. They were separated by Russian new star Yaroslava Nikolayeva. Promising debut of the juniors champion Doina Gorun who placed 10th, ahead of the next 16 athletes.

Women’s bodyfitness up to 168 cm category
Two top places winners from Bialystok didn’t come, so the next girls fought for the titles. But the most successful one was a newcomer at this level Solveig Wilhems of Norway, after the very close battle against… the second Norwegian athlete Kristina Skjelberg (4th place winner in Bialystok). The first round was extremely tough as three girls earned the same scores: Wilhems, Skjelberg and 2009 world champion Katarzyna Kozakiewicz-Kowalik of Poland. The second round was less successful for Kozakiewicz-Kowalik who was scored in the 5th place, while Wilhems earned only one-point advantage over Skjelberg. Anyway, two Norwegian athletes in the top two places, what happened also at the 2010 Worlds (Nina Furseth, Thea Eriksen).
Eva Rusan of Croatia, who placed 12th in Bialystok, improved her body condition so much that jumped up to the 3rd position.

Women’s bodyfitness over 168 cm category
Probably, the biggest revolution compared to the results from Bialystok. World champion Anastasia Gurina dropped to the 3rd place, two points ahead of the European champion Khoudiedji Sidibe. The happy winner Zsuzsanna Toldi of Hungary attacked from the 5th position in Bialystok and the quality of her body and performance was so high that she won with almost perfect scores. Second place went to Russian new athlete Elena Kirshchina who jumped into this group of the world best bodyfitness girls in her first international start. Nice perspectives.

Master women’s bodyfitness open category
Impressive line-up of 27 competitors, with majority of the Spanish ladies but the top three places went to the other countries. Brigitte Subrin of France followed the successes of Sidibe and grasp the title, showing amazing body lines and proportions; however in the first round she was tied with the British beauty Maria Scotland. The third place to the next Norwegian sensation Monica Dale Claussen. These new names at the international level placed ahead of the well-known Spanish star Emi Perez who finished third last year and placed second at the 2011 Masters Worlds. This is an evidence that even in the masters category we can still expect newcomers with great potentials.

Women’s fitness up to 163 cm category
Only Hungarian star Timea Taraba-Sifter came from the Women’s Worlds. She easily won the routine round but lost to Margarita Abramova in the second round; however earned the better total score and was declared the winner. She is progressing every contest and moving up in the ranking. Then three new girls from Italy: Cristina Seggi, Ferdinanda Picconi and Olena Cherkeda, separated by British champion Emmalouise Bowen.

Women’s fitness over 163 cm category
2012 world champion Natalia Chukaeva didn’t come but all other finalist from Bialystok were present. Anyway, the title went to the 2011 world overall champion Alevtyna Titarenko who easily won both rounds. We can only admire her routine and physique perfection. Oksana Orobets of Ukraine finished in the 2nd place, few points ahead of Marta Aguiar but this time lost to Aguiar the physique assessment round. South American champion Marta Aguiar perfectly prepared her body to this contests. Rebeka Gyulay of Hungary can perform a good routine (3rd place in this round) but need to improve her body condition.

Men’s fitness open category
The next outstanding spectacle by the top world fitness athletes. 2011 world champion Oleg Anissimovn lost the routine round to two Ukrainians: Nazar Kharkhun and Fedir Khashalov but moved up to the 1st place after the physique assessment round. Lubos Koumal of the Czech Republic placed high in both rounds and took the 2nd place, while the routine round winner Fedir Khashalov dropped to the 3rd position.
Different acrobatic skills, different physiques and different results of each round.

Men’s classic bodybuilding up to 175 cm category
The next category with 26 athletes and tough battle of the top four in the finals. Two former World Championships runners-up: Miguel Perez (Spain) and Alexander Barbashin (Russia) were tied in the second round, so the routine round decided on the final victory of Perez. Moreover, then he won the overall title. Life achievements! Former European champion Przemyslaw Zokowski of Poland took the 3rd position.

Men’s classic bodybuilding up to 180 cm category
Bulgaria brought the winner: Rosen Ivanov, who advanced from the 5th place at 2011 ACE. Turkish bodybuilder and the European Championships runner-up Ali Emre advanced to the 2nd place, single points ahead of the next three athletes: Wilhelm Pascal (France), Alex Contarini (Spain) and Nikolay Stoyanov (Bulgaria).

Men’s classic bodybuilding over 180 cm category
Very tough combat of the 2011 world champion Taavi Koovit of Estonia against new athlete from Iran, Majid Gholamghamari. They changed places from round to round and were finally tied, with Majid as a winner. The next very gifted bodybuilder from Iran.
