2012 ARNOLD STRONGMAN CLASSIC EUROPE CONTENDERS

Zydrunas Savickas, Lithuania

Born: 1975
Residence: Birzai, Lithuania
Occupation: strongman, powerlifter
Height: 191 cm
Bodyweight: 170 kg

One of the greatest strongmen of all times. Won all biggest strongman competitions in the world but started from powerlifting, coming 2nd at the 2000 IPF World Powerlifting Championships doing 1020 kg in total, just 2,5 kg behind Brad Gillingham. In 1998 won his first Lithuanian Strongest Man Championships and the same year went to his first Worlds Strongest Man contest. But he had to wait a longer time for success as in 2001 he tore both patellar tendons during the Conans wheel event. It was so dangerous injury that many thought his career would have to be over but nine months later Savickas was back on the stage, winning the Lithuanian Powerlifting Championships and took the 2nd place at the 2002 World Strongest Man in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, behind Mariusz Pudzianowski.
The next two years brought him the same results, coming 2nd behind Pudzianowski (in 2003) and Vasyl Virastyuk (in 2004). Then he moved to IFSA and won the 2005 IFSA Strongman World Man Championships. In the meantime, he dominated the Arnold Strongman Classic, winning six consecutive editions of this event (2003-2008). At the last ever IFSA World Championships placed 3rd, behind Vasily Virastyuk and Mikhail Koklyaev. In 2008 he took part in the inaugural Strongman Champions League series, winning 5 of 7 contests and the overall title, over Ervin Katona.

In the next years he won the World Strongest Man (2009 and 2010) and finished 2nd to Brian Shaw in 2011. He aslo won the Strongman Champions League finals (2010 and 2011). His favourite event is the log lift: he has been the world log lift record holder since 2005, breaking the world record 9 times. He has already done it three times in 2012, with the best result of 217.5 kg at the SCL Holland in June. He has been in a top condition through the first half of 2012, winning 6 of 7 SCL contests. Who can stop him? At the 2012 Arnold Classic Europe in Madrid he will meet top three challengers: Brian Shaw, Mike Jenkins and Mikhail Koklyaev. This will be the battle of the year!
